Poas Volcano

Our good friends from Atlanta, Chuck and Sharon Cobbs, are here visiting.  They have a rental car with a GPS so we decided to take off and see Volcan Poas (the Poas volcano). We started out early in the morning because we knew there was a lot to see on the way.  Our first stop was the crocodile bridge.

Gail said she counted 29 crocodiles on one side of the bridge and five on the other side.

Some were really big.

 Some tried to hide.

But they all looked really mean.

We left the crocodiles and headed north on highway 34.  This is the main highway that goes north and south along the Pacific coast.  It is a toll road and we had to pay about $1.60 three times each way.

When we arrived at the Poas volcano it was chilly and we had fortunately brought jackets with us.  We had to hike the last quarter mile or so to the top.  It was quite spectacular.

You could see where the lava had flowed down the mountain the last time it erupted which was in 1953.

We spotted four people who had some how hiked down into the volcano.  I used my telephoto lens at its maximum to see them.  You can get an idea of how deep the volcano is when you try to spot the people in this next photo.

We left the volcano and headed home via a little different route.
